THE LEXLINE VERDICT: Web3 Wins with Carlo⚖️.eth
Crypto law, Hosting Rug Radio's LexLine, and Italian cooking
Everyday, new legal developments in web3 impact how creators, businesses and investors interact. More than ever, there’s a need for high quality discussion of legal issues, from intellectual property to securities law. Rug Radio’s LexLine show, hosted by Carlo.eth and Ray@gencolaw, fits that bill and is a must-listen. Every Tuesday through Friday at 12:30 EDT, these hosts, plus attorneys and guests who join the space, engage in lively debate that moves web3 law forward. WagginWendy had the privilege of interviewing Carlo.eth, whose passions range from crypto criminal defense to Italian cooking.
When and how did you get involved in web3 and web3 law?
I first become in interested in Web3 tech in the early summer of 2021. I heard Gary Vee talk about NFTs and all the amazing use-cases that were possible with blockchain tech. In the beginning I was strictly a collector and did not really see how I could bring value to the community as a lawyer. I wrongly believed that Web3 law was strictly limited to IP and business formation law. Then I sat in on a Twitter Space with Jakester2705 (The NFT Lawyer back then) and a group of other lawyers and CPAs who were discussing the tax pitfalls of trading NFTs and operating a business in Web3. As I listened to the questions being asked by the people in that Space, I quickly realized that there will be a huge need in this space for lawyers who can help clients with criminal and regulatory investigatory matters.
It was around October of 2021 that I launched DeFi Defense Lawyer. I saw it as an opportunity to leverage my 25-plus years of criminal defense work to help clients in the crypto, blockchain and Web3 space.
Do you specialize in any particular area of web3 law? What developments in web3 law do you follow most closely?
I am not permitted under State bar rules to say I am an expert in any area of law unless I am board certified. That being said, my primary focus is the area of blockchain crime.
We have seen a major emphasis by the U.S. Department of Justice in deploying resources to the investigation of crypto crime. On a daily basis I closely monitor the latest cases being brought by prosecutors in this space and share that content via Twitter. LexLine has also provided me an excellent platform for engaging with other talented Web3 lawyers across various practice fields and sharing the latest in blockchain legal developments.
What made you decide to host a Rug Radio show?
After launching DeFi Defense Lawyer, I began to host and speak on Twitter Spaces discussing the history and origins of blockchain crime as a predictor of where future regulation would land in the space. It was in those Spaces that I started to connect with other Web3 lawyers in the space.
In those spaces I met my future LexLine co-host @GencoLaw. I really enjoyed the unique perspective Ray brought to blockchain law and Web3 culture. It was around that time that I realized that Web3 legal talk was an important area that was under-served in the space. I was also impressed with what RugRadio was building around that time and noticed that there were no shows on the line-up dealing with Web3 law so I approached Genco with the idea and the rest is history!
What are your favorite non-web3 interests/ hobbies?
Anyone who follows me on Twitter, knows that I am a major foodie and love to post pics from my kitchen. Cooking Italian food has always been a passion of mine.
